HD LInk Utility Help Needed please
Posted by Richard Tilley on July 12, 2008 at 10:59 pmHd extreme card with HDlink.
Seems set up OK apart from I cant access utility settings. all greyed out.
When usb is plugged in I get an error that port is drawing too much power (comuter slows down too) (G5 eightcore first gen.). this happens on any port.
Im getting playback in AE of screen so it works but I need to go into settings to calibrate etc. At mo it looks no better / differnt to standard monitor mode. seems to have 2.5.1 version of utility installed.
Please Help.Richard

July 14, 2008 at 1:42 amHi Richard,
I see the same message, about drawing too much power, when I plug my USB 2.0 memory stick in to a USB port on my keyboard. If I directly plug it in to one of the USB 2.0 ports on the Mac, there is no problem.
Have you tried directly connecting the HDLink to a USB 2.0 port on your G5? I’m guessing you might be connecting via some kind of USB hub, such as the USB ports on a computer monitor. HDLink does work with a direct connection to a USB 1.1 port but mightn’t receive enough bandwidth on a shared port so please try a direct connection to a USB 2.0 port on the G5 itself and see if this fixes your problem.

July 14, 2008 at 8:19 pmthanks for replying. What youve suggested is what im already doing. tried the front and rear ports but nothing. when its plugged in it disables all the slots next to it too. wacom mouse etc.
The only thing I can think of is the power lead im using to power the Link box. (not supplied) so Im using a spare 5amp kettle lead. !?! -

July 15, 2008 at 6:10 amHi Richard,
Thank you for confirming you have tried a direct USB connection to a USB 2.0 port on the G5. Given that, I want to check something you said about the power source for the HDLink. If you use a third party power adapter, there is a high chance of damaging the HDLink. The IEC power cable is not a source of problems but substituting another power adapter might well explain the problem you are seeing. Can you please clarify if you are using the power adapter which should be included with the HDLink or if you are using a power adapter which you have supplied yourself?

July 15, 2008 at 2:22 pmTo Clarify,YES I am using the Power adapter that came in the box with the HDlink. There was not a power cable (kettle lead) supplied as well, to power the adapter so I used one I had already.its a 240v 10Amp lead. Im in comms with supplier too but nothing is resolved yet.
Ive tried taking out all other usb fed peripherals but still no luck.
I have connected it to another Mac here. (Power PC G5) and it DOES work. the options are all selectable and there is no power drain alert either!! Cant uswe that Mac though cos the Extreme card isnt compatable! -

July 16, 2008 at 2:27 amHi Richard,
Thank you for confirming you are using the HDLink power supply and I’m sure your IEC cable will have no bearing on the problem you are encountering. HDLink isn’t drawing any power from the USB port and that’s why it has external power.
This is a puzzling problem. Can you please disconnect the USB link to the HDLink and then launch the HDLink Utility. Now disconnect all USB devices from your G5 at the front and at the back. Remove your keyboard and mouse too! I want to test the possibility that a shared USB bus is struggling to cope with all your USB devices. Now plug in the HDLink and see if the HDLink software interface becomes active and/or if you see the low power message. If this seems to work, plug in your USB devices one by one, starting with the keyboard and mouse and observe if and when the low power message appears.
If this doesn’t work, please let me know. While this could be a bug in HDLink, I think that is unlikely as I haven’t heard of any other reports of this problem. There could be a USB issue with your G5 but it’s hard to be sure given other USB devices seem to work OK. So please let me know how you go with all USB devices removed and just connecting the HDLink. This should help to narrow down the problem.

November 22, 2010 at 10:52 pmWas a resolution to this problem found?
I have what seems to be a very similar problem.
I’ve got an original HDLink, and downloaded the latest V3.5 HDLink Utility.
My HDLink works (signal on my cinema display).
However I can’t get the HDLink Utility to recognise the unit. I’ve tried in Mac OSX, and Windows XP.
Settings are always greyed out in the utility, so I can’t control it.Any help much appreciated.
