    Hi,

I have rather newbie question. I’m using FCP6 & Decklink HD Extreme. I’d like know what compressed codecs I can use in FCP6 & preview them on broadcast monitor without rendering. I tried Sorensen 3 & Photo JPEG but they don’t show on my external monitor. Only when I drop these compressed media into blackmagic timeline I can see them on external monitor but they need to be rendered everytime. So far it seems only media with blackmagic codec & ProRes codec can be viewed on external monitor without rendering. Am I missing something ? Do I need to re-encode all my media to these 2 codecs to be able to preview them via decklink card on the external monitor ?

Is possible to use & edit media with codecs like Sorensen 3, MPEG4 , H264, PhotoJPEG, etc. and preview them without rendering via decklink card on broadcast monitor in FCP6?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks very much ,

    Jen

You can use compressed codecs, but they are more editing related codecs, and are based around tape formats.

DV, DVCPRO, DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO HD can be used natively in the timeline, and displayed on your Decklink Card without rendering.

However, distribution types of codecs (ones usually meant for content delivery – i’m stressing usually, because a couple cameras acquire in PhotoJPEG and JPEG2000, and Panasonic P2 is using a varient of H.264 called AVC) such as h.264, PhotoJPEG, Sorenson 3 and MPEG4 have not been supported by most editing I/O cards and systems. Even on an Avid you have to render out these types of codecs.

This is normal. Annoying at times, depending on what you’re doing, but normal.

We have the same question. We shot a feature documentary on 1080i50 PAL. We are editing here in Los Angeles on (so far) LCD Monitors at 60HZ.

We would like to install a Black Magic card and then hook up a PAL monitor so we can see the actual clips how it will be displayed in PAL countries.

We are trying to avoid having to re-encode all this EX1 footage into a BlackMagic Codec- this would take forever and require a lot more storage— or having to render the EX1 clips in Blackmagic Time-line just to see the external monitor output.

I’ve heard conflicting reports about going the Matrox route- as they do not have native EX1 settings. However, I heard that Matrox is codec independent so just find the closest setting – (I think 1920 x 1080 in a 4:2:2 color space as opposed to the EX1 4:2:0)

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to best accomplish viewing EX1 footage on an external PAL monitor?

    Thanks,

    Chad
