Solution to a mixture of demands for monitoring & capture?
Hi there, (first post – please excuse my ignorance)
I’m getting more and more freelancing editing work and
doing some music videos in various formats in my spare
time & want to take the next step towards monitoring
and capturing with my intel MacPro system.At the moment i only have the one 23″ apple display but
there’s a few things i’d like to be up and running for
soon without going too far out on a limb cash wise. ie.
i’m also afraid of spending money in the wrong direction
as it were – i haven’t a great deal of it!Things i’d like to do:
1. First and foremost i’d like to be able to monitor SD
more easily as (for now at least) that’s where most of
my work is. At the moment i usually borrow a deck and
connect via firewire to that and then from the deck to
the client’s monitor via SDI.I’d also like o be able to monitor HDV occasionally now
and and HD in the future.2. I’m interested in capturing HDV directly without the
high GOP problem (Apple ProRes etc?) as the time it takes
me to export is really adding to my workload.
(I’m not RAID equipped though so i’m concerned about
sufficient disk speeds for the larger file sizes etc)First brief bits of research have pointed me in the direction
of a Blackmagic intensity card for the HDV capture but
i’m confused about the rest. For example i have no idea
what sort of monitor i should get on a small budget.If anyone could help me out or even point me in the
direction of someone else who can I’d be really grateful.

Hi,
The lowest cost option is the Intensity Pro card at US$349. Gives you HDMI I/O, Component (HD and SD)/Composite (SD)/S-Video (SD) I/O. With this, you can monitor out to consumer type plasmas or HDTV via HDMI or Component. Or you can even go component HD to a broadcast monitor if you want.
One step up will be the DeckLink HD Extreme (US$995). This gives you HD-SDI/SDI-DI, Component (HD and SD)/Composite (SD)/S-Video (SD) I/O.
If you need both HDMI I/O and SD/HD-SDI, then have a look at the Multibridge Pro (US$1595).

Thank you Kristian that’s really helpful – do i need some kind of adapter to go out from the Intensity Pro to composite
SD and/or s-video SD? It seems to just have the firewire
and HDMI ports…Also if anyone can suggest some “basic quality” monitors
that would be great. I’m obviously not going to be
doing super high end grading work just yet but i would
like to be able to get stuck in to some colour work –
especially on the music videos…thanks!

You’ll need an S-video adapter as all the analog outputs of the breakout cable from the Intensity Pro are RCA females. More information about the breakout cable is mentioned here:

For composite or component cables, you’ll also need the normal RCA cables.
