Decklink HDPro Audio to Mixer
Posted by Mike on May 23, 2007 at 8:51 pmHello all,
I just purchased the Decklink HDPro. So far I’m pretty happy. I also have the HDlink feeding my Apple 23inch monitor for playback. Is there a way I can hook up audio to my audio mixer (mackie 1202-VLZ) so I can monitor splits without going the SDI route. Make sense? I have an AJA IO and have all four channels linked to the mixer via XLR cables. It’s great for reviewing split audio. I’d like to do the same for the Decklink HDpro. Any ideas? Thanks.

May 23, 2007 at 10:45 pmblackmagic makes many fine cards that are HD cards, that have analog audio outputs, to feed your Mackie 1202. The Decklink HDPro is not one of them. Had you bought the Decklink HD Extreme, you would have had the analog audio outputs. Converters for you !

May 23, 2007 at 11:44 pmThanks Bob Zelin,
As far as converters and connections, what would you recommend? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, I purchased this card for 4:4:4 as opposed to a 4:2:2 limit. Guess I got greedy and jumped the gun.
Thanks for your help,
Mike

May 24, 2007 at 1:29 amYou know what….after further review, I think we’re going to swap out the BM Decklink HDPro with the AJA Kona 3 w/Kbox. The Decklink is a great card and I would highly recommend it if you don’t need analog audio. Their website says something similiar to this effect. Call me old school but I really want to be able to monitor my audio (split audio especially) through my mixer. I want to accomplish this without buying analog/digital audio converters or going through a deck. Oh, and I guess the whole 2k thing is pretty cool too **Sacasm**.
So…can I still monitor SDI out to my Apple 23inch via BM HDLink or do I need to purchase AJA’s HDP? Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

May 24, 2007 at 6:17 amHi Mike,
There are a couple of ways you could go. One is to use the HDLink with the Kona and it will work fine for DVI and HDMI based monitoring.
An alternative would be to swap over your DeckLink HD Pro and HDLink for a Multibridge Extreme. This is essentially an external capture/playback device which has built-in DVI/HDMI monitoring and includes 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 support as well as SDI and analog connectivity. It has two channels of analog XLR audio output and you can also use the RCA analog HiFi audio monitoring outputs. The Multibridge Extreme is already at a lower price and you will also save on the cost of a HDLink.

May 24, 2007 at 11:31 amLuke is correct, and Mike, you are being blind once again, with your thoughts of the Kona 3. The Kona 3 is a GREAT card, but FORGET 4:4:4 and 2K – you need REAL WORLD stuff, and this means anlaog inputs and outputs. Since you are in Blackmagic land, get the Blackmagic Decklink Extreme, save money (as Luke said), and get EVERYTHING you need – of course, the HD version, so you don’t have to buy yet another card. I don’t care what you think – you need analog INPUTS and outputs, and will continue to need these for the next several years. If you don’t listen to this advice, you will ultimately wind up buying converters, which will cost a lot of money.

Thank you for responding. We’re trying to decide on getting the Decklink HD Extreme or the Multibridge like you suggested. Since we already have the HDlink, we’re leaning more towards the HD Extreme. It’s cheaper too. What are the stand out differences between the Multibridge and the HD Extreme?
Thank you,
Mike

May 24, 2007 at 6:00 pmBob I’m in complete agreement with you. Analog audio is a must. I’m deciding on whether to go with the HD Extreme like you suggested or the Multibridge Extreme like Luke suggested. I appreciate your advice. Thanks again!

May 28, 2007 at 6:54 amHi Mike,
The DeckLink HD Extreme works in 4:2:2 whereas the Multibridge Extreme works in 4:2:2 and dual-link 4:4:4 if you need it. The Multibridge Extreme had built-in DVI/HDMI monitoring.
If you don’t need 4:4:4 dual-link, then the DeckLink HD Extreme and HDLink combination should be a good configuration for your needs.
