  Intensity & Matorx Video Card

  Hi,

  I recently picked up an Intesity card and installed it in a dedicated Premiere Pro machine that uses a Matrox APVe video card. The Intensity card is connected to a Sony HD monitor. I also downloaded the 1.3 drivers. When I try to view clips on the HD monitor from the timeline, I either get a black picture with red horizontal lines or part of the image that flickers and rolls as if I had a vertical sync problem.

  I noticed on the minimum requirements for the Intensity card does not “support” Matrox cards, and I am hoping that this is the source of my problems, but I would hate to run out and buy a Nvidia or ATI card only to find that I was doing something wrong on my existing setup. This may be a dumb question, but does the word “support” in this case mean that it flat doesn’t work, or some other conditional abilities?

  Hi Richard,

  We’ve previously encountered problems with Matrox cards including black video output so that is why we recommend nVIDIA and ATI. Having said that, Matrox cards in theory should work fine so before you buy another graphics card, please ensure that your system specifications match those listed on the Intensity Minimum System Requirements for Windows. If you already have a system that matches these requirements, then it is likely that using a different graphics card will help.

  Hi Luke,

  Thanks for the reply. The system consists of an Asus P5W DH Deluxe board, an Intel Quad core processor, 4 gig of RAM, XP Pro service pac 2, a system HD, and a SATA Raid for video files. About the only software on the computer is the Adobe Production Suite Premium.

  I pulled the Matrox card and installed a GeForce 8800 GTX card, reinstalled the 1.3 Intensity drivers with the same results. I also tried using the Intensity stand alone Media Express program. I pulled an .avi file into M E and got the exact same problem. I also loaded the .mov test pattern files from the Intesity disk, and M E gave me a message that said “Unable to Play File” which is really wierd in that .mov files show as one of the options in M E.

  The HD monitor starts displaying rolling red lines as soon as I boot up the computer without any programs running, and continues to do so until I attempt to play a file from either M E or Premiere. At that point, I either get the same rolling red lines or part of an image that also rolls. At one point the picture displayed correctly and I got audio, but only for a couple of seconds and then it went back to rolling partial images.

  I realize that the GeForce 8800 is not on your list of supported video cards (the list says GeForce 7 series), but I really wonder if that’s the problem because both cards show that exact same problems.

  It was suggested that I remove the Intesity card and install it in a different computer which I can do, although the other computer is at a different location, and there isn’t anything there that accepts a HDMI signal. I suppose that I may have a bad Intensity card but I haven’t installed a bad card for any company in years.

  Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
