  • How to test DeckLink HD without a SDI deck ?

Posted by Matthew London on April 10, 2007 at 9:58 pm

    Hi,

    I have a DeckLink HD on a Mac G5 running FCP 5.1.2.
I dont own a SDI deck, preferring to rent one when needed, or I bring my G5 into a studio that has one.
The last time I tried to output, I was getting the “No Video Input” message, and wound up having to output from a different system.
Is there any way to test the card without a deck hooked up to it? ie: a loop-back cable or something like that?
The card plays out to a monitor fine, I’m just concerned about it seeing the deck properly.

    Thanks,
    Matthew

    Hi Matthew,

Please quit out of all applications. Go to the Dock, open the System Preferences and select Displays. Ensure that Show displays in menu bar is enabled.

Click on the Displays menu (near the top right of your computer monitor) and set Number of recent items to 10.

Now click on the Displays menu again and you should see all the resolutions of your DeckLink HD series card. Select a standard definition resolution and Hz rate, eg 720 x 486 and 29 Hz for NTSC.

Now launch Blackmagic Deck Control and go in to its preferences and set the easy setup to NTSC and click OK. The right window in Blackmagic Deck Control should show No video input. Connect an SDI cable from the deck output of the card to the input of the card. If the No video input message is replaced by a black window, then the card is working fine. Remove the SDI cable and you should see No video input again.
