  • Sound stutters on Mac Pro with Decklink Extreme HD

We are running Mac Pro Quad core 3Ghz Xeon, 5 GB Ram, 4 Internal drives(system + 3 750 GB extras). Running all latest software updates, etc. System works well in FCP.

Any sound we play outside of FCP- like DVD Studio Pro, QuickTime player- etc sounds highly distorted and stutters. Sounds a little like scrubbing through an audio timeline. When we switch sound output in System Preferences back to the Mac Pro’s internal speakers all sounds fine. Any suggestions?

I’m on the 2.66 Mac Pro and same current software, and BMD HD Extreme card. No issues with sound in other apps. Haven’t tried DVD Studio Pro yet.

Well I would love that but right now I don’t have that situation. 🙂

    Hi Noah,
I should clarify my audio settings. In the Sound Pref pane, I have mine set to “Built-in Line Output”. I run a line out of the Mac Pro to the audio mixer and monitor Mac audio at the mixer. Final Cut audio travels out the Decklink cables to the mixer on its own mixer inputs. That may be the difference. Hope you’re able to get your audio issue resolved.

Hmm- that is my current solution as well but it would be great to be able to use the Decklink for all sounds on the system if that’s appropriate and possible. On my older systems this wasn’t a problem.

Sounds like there was a audio handoff between Apple and BMD hardware that used to work, but doesn’t on the new Mac Pro. We’ll probably see Apple or BMD coming out with an update to address this.

    Hi Noah,

We’re not seeing this issue here but I’ll confirm it again.

Are you sending any form of sync into the HD Extreme card and what happens when you play out in iTunes?

    regards

No sync is being sent- we are capturing Varicam footage from a 1200A deck. Everything is fine in FCP. Though we hear the same issue in FCP- if we playback from the timeline while the log and capture window is open.

    Had the same problem.

On one new Mac Pro system changing the HD Extreme slot helped to solve sound playback problem.
Uninstall BM drivers, change card slot (in my case i put the card into most upper one, No4 if I’m right) reinstall BM drivers.

    In my case helped.
