NTSC color sync help ( It aint easy being GREEN!! )
Extremely new to hooking these guys up to my computer.
I just bought a Black Magic — Decklink Pro this after noon to connect a Trinitron 21inch NTSC monitor to my computer to help with my motion work. A friend of mine let me borrow his monitor and told me the card to get but unfortunately I am left trying to figure out how to hook it up.
Now I got the software installed and I have it linked to my AE so I can view in the NTSC monitor… However I am stuck on Green, everything is Green. in the monitors menu there is a RGB SYNC menu item, within the item is EXT SYNC and SYNC ON GREEEN… Now I am sure it has something to do with this but still I am having trouble figuring this out. when I put the setting on EXT SYNC it freaks out on me and flickers, when its on SYNC ON GREEN the monitor is fine but its all GREEN based color.
that is as far as I have got with this and I don’t know enough out how to set this up to continue.

I have no idea of what monitor you are using – is it a new monitor, an old monitor, a professional monitor, a monitor that takes RGB, or takes Beta component Y Pb Pr, or is it switchable ? The analog component signal out of modern capture cards conform to Sony Beta standards, which are Y, Pb, Pr (or for Sony Y, R-Y, B-Y), which have SYNC ON Y or sync on green. But this is for Y Pb Pr, not for RGB. There are plenty of OLD Sony “pro” monitors that did not do Y Pb Pr, but only did RGB, and this is not going to be a friendly monitor to any modern capture card (although you can choose a menu to select RGB if you are so inclined). If you state the EXACT monitor you are using, it would be helpful for me to identify your problem. In the 21st century, video pros dont’ use RGB (don’t say that to After Effects guys or Discreet guys, becuase they will kill you).

Thanks Bob for the info. I’ve been doing animation for the web for the past 10 years and now I’m in Broadcast… a whole new set of rules and laws to learn. Oh well little by little.
as far the problem, I’m not sure why the RGB ports were giving me a green signal, but I did connect the “Composite” cable into the video port in “A” and everything corrected… Not sure what I did or why it did that but it works fine now.
Looks like a few courses are in my near future, that or a few good books anyway.

Well I have the same problem but in PAL. I bouth two weeks ago a JVC monitor with two imput cards. One SDI and one RGB/Components. I swicht it to a Black Magic SD Extreme, that I bouth toguether. When I play anything, the SD in is OK and the Components too. But when I when I select the RGB one, everything is GREEN in my screen. Any help Kristian/
The monitor is a JVC DT-1710 CGE. The video cards are: JVC IF-CO1 COMG and JVC IF-C51SDG.

NEVER select RGB ever again – everything you own, and everything else that everyone else owns in the 21st century is Beta component Y Pb Pr, or Y R-Y B-Y. No broadcast video products use RGB. Even “back then” it was RGBHV, which was RGB with external horizontal and vertical sync. Early Truevision products has sync on Green for RGB, but this ain’t 1980 anymore. RGB is refered to because of those “damn” Adobe After Effects artists (and the few exclusive Discreet Inferno guys), but in the real world – RGB does not apply to us. Switch your menu’s to Beta Component, and your problem will be gone.

Your right Bob. I work normally in components. But I just want to know why the screen is green. Obviously mast to be a malfuction for any reason.
