No Colorspace Conversion on Downconvert?
I had a colorist come in and correct a 720 HD timeline in Final Cut 5.1.
He was viwing the output on an NTSC broadcast monitor using the Decklink Extreme’s downconversion via SDI. So basically, we wanted this to be WYSIWYG since the master had to go to Digibeta. The colors he saw on the NTSC monitor is exactly what we intended to ouput to tape.
But when I copied and pasted his work on to a SD 10-bit NTSC timeline, there was a massive gamma shift. I assume this was because of the change in colorspace from 709 to 601. But I should not have noticed a change in gamma on the NTSC monitor. The reason is because although the footage was originally HD, I we were viewing it donconverted on the same monitor.
In other words, there are two ways to downconvert. Whether it’s HD timeline and I use the Decklink to downconvert, or if it’s downconverted via software rendering. Whichever is used, result SHOULD be the same. There should not be any kind of color or luma shift on the broadcast monitor regardless of which method I am using.
So why is there one then? Does the Decklink Extreme not change the colorspace to 601 during downconversion? Was I already supposed to know this? It really screwed us up because I could not Edit to Tape using the Decklink’s downconversion. Too many dropped frames.
