  • Would this disk array work with HD Extreme?

I’m running a BM SD Extreme card with my Atto UL4D AND 4 10k drives.

I know that reccommeded config is as such:

“We recommend 8 x 10k drives or 6 x 15k drives when building an array. However, you can go as low as 6 for 10k and 4 for 15k; however the extra disks will help improve performance as the drives fill to capacity.”

However here are the stats on my current JBOD and they appear at first glance to be just about sufficent?

I am amazed that you are getting these results with only 4 10k SCSI drives. So the answer to your question is yes, but I have tried this in the past, and never got your results. Your specs are similar to a loaded XServe RAID – so either something is up, or you have a miracle on your hands.

You did not state if you were doing SD or HD work. For SD work, even if these specs are wrong, you will still be ok, but for HD work, you will probably suffer if you don’t have more drives. Today, few people use SCSI drives, and more are using Fibre, SCSI to ATA (like HUGE and Medea), or SATA. Standard SCSI has become “old school”, and certainly expensive.

But hey – if it’s working – go for it.

    thanks bob.

yes i get the same results over and over again. my four Seagate Cheetahs ST373307LC are loaded into a heavy black box kind of thing (very technical description there, ahem) and connected with a dual atto scsi card.

perhaps its because at the moment the drive is as clean as a whistle? or maybe its the latest atto drivers?

regardless i will tread carefully before purchasing anything…..

I have a similar config with 8 Seagate drives, and double the speed results….it’s no fluke…
