DVI-D to BNC?
Considering upgrading in room monitors from old sony LCD to Apple 23″. Machine room roughly 40-80 feet from edit bays. Anyone have insights into throwing a DVI signal over BNC that far? Or maybe the Gefen DVI extenders that use cat-5?

We just bought some 50′ DVI-D cables off of eBay that seem to work fine with our 23″ Cinema Displays… The other options are rather expensive.

you will find that long DVI-D cables will ultimately fail after a certain distance. Gefen and others make DVI extenders that work great, and Gefen even has a DVI booster for long DVI cables that start to fail, in addition to their CAT 5 series extenders.

I think you would be better off converting the output from the machine room to an SDI signal and then you have 300f to play with. To monitor the deck have a HDlink at the end of the SDI.
What type of Decks are in the machine room ? What is the layout of the studio?

Everything’s in the machine room. G5’s, digibeta, D5, etc…. there are runs of 12 x 75ohm coax (hd rated) going to each edit bay, plus an assortment of XLR and Cat 5. edit bays have anywhere from 20 to 80 feet of cable between them and the machine room. Currently we’re running 2x 18″ sony LCD with analog vga capabilites – so a 2x VGA to 5 BNC adapter, and at the other and a 5 BNC to 2xVGA adapter. That leaves 2 free BNC per room (one for SDI monitoring – HD or SD and one left over).
Basically if we go with DVD-D monitors, we need to make sure that we can feed a DVD-D signal over existing cabling. Unfortunately everything in runs in PVC tubing under concrete flooring….so re-running new cabling would costs more time and effort than living with otherwise perfectly good 18″ sony LCD.

just use the Gefen CAT 5 extenders – they will work great for the Cinema displays. Use your existing lines in the conduit to act as pull lines to yank the new CAT 5 cables into place. It’s very easy to pull out this cable (provided it’s not crammed in there) and as you yank it out, yank the new CAT 5 lines along with it.bob Zelin
