OK, I must be doing something stupid with voiceover tool….
I seem to have a problem getting any audio into my decklink extreme using the voiceover tool in FCP4.5.
Up until recently I was using a Cinewave and connected up easily to the outputs of my mixing desk into the cinewave XLR inputs. Which is how I’m connecting up now. But there’s absolutely nothing coming into FCP.The mixing desk is showing a good signal. I’ve got all audio inputs set to Decklink (in FCP capture presets, and in system prefs). Is there anything I’m missing? I also notice that I can’t get any level when capturing from a Beta SP deck unless I’ve also got a video signal coming in. Is this normal? Or does this suggest the same problem – after all, I’ve got no video input when I’m working with the voiceover tool.
Lastly, when outputting to Beta SP via component, I can’t get any audio or video out of FCP when using the edit to tape function. Playing back from the timeline is fine, just bringing up the edit to tape window loses output, and when actually editing to tape I just get black and silence. The edit to tape window also says ‘No Input Video’.
Hope someone can help. I’ve tried everything I can think of and am feeling a bit of a thickie. I’m sure it’s something extremely simple I’m overlooking….!

Hi Jamie,
Voice Over Tool is supported in Final Cut Pro HD. To enable Voice Over Tool, you need to follow a similar procedure to DV, and use the following settings. Use the Displays menu (page 13 of the DeckLink Macintosh v2 manual) to set the DeckLink desktop to the same format as the video source, eg. NTSC 720 x 486. Next in the View menu of Final Cut Pro HD, set External Video to “Off”. When finished with the Voice Over Tool, set External Video to “All Frames” to use the broadcast monitor.
In regards to your problem outputting to the Betacam SP, can you please ensure that you have both inputs and outputs, for video and audio, connected between the deck and the DeckLink Extreme card?

Thanks for the reply.
So, just to make sure I understand properly: to output to the SP, I need to be connected both in and out of the Decklink? At the moment all my component connections go through a patchbay so if the decklink output is connected to the SP input through this, do I also need to have the SP output connected to the decklink input?
I know there was a similar thing when I was using Cinewave with the SDI connection and the in and out had to be connected at the same time. Is it a similar situation with the decklink (whether SDI or component)?

Hi Jamie,
To output from the DeckLink Extreme to the deck, you should not need to have the output of the deck connected to the input of the DeckLink Extreme. However if you don’t, then you will continue to see “No video input” when in the Edit to Tape window. This is because that window should show you the video frame on the current tape in the deck. If those cables are not connected, then you have no way to monitor the video from the deck in the ETT window.
Please quit out of FCP and launch Blackmagic Deck Control. Is it able to output to the deck? Just open your movie in to Deck Control and then choose to Put Clip.

Thanks for the reply… and sorry for my late reply! Been away at a film festival….
Anyway! everything seems to be up and running OK. I’m ouputting to tape OK, and I’ve also got signal up in the vo tool now!
But next problem concerning the vo tool….
Now I’ve set the external vid to ‘off’ there’s obviously no audio coming out of the decklink (as well as no vid). Sorry to keep drawing comparisons with Cinewave, but I’m used to being able to a voiceover session with the video output active and sending a signal to the video monitor, and also the audio signal coming out to my mixer where I can get a good mix between the timeline sound and voiceover sound for monitoring. Presumably I can run some audio monitoring from the headphone out of my G4, but is there any way of hearing it while actually voicing as an output from the decklink?
