SATA Raids and Decklink
Posted by Damon Surzyshyn on October 19, 2005 at 7:22 pmAnyone using a 3 drive SATA Raid (0) on Mac OSX with a decklink? I’m thinking of adding a Sonnet G5 Jam, Sonnnet Tempo X 4+4 eSATA controller and 3 Seagate Barracudas.
Thanks

October 19, 2005 at 8:28 pmHi,
The “Drive Bracket” is quite a bit cheaper and allows three additional drives which would allow you to use a four drive internal RAID array plus an internal boot drive:

The G5 Drive Bracket
A third option for adding up to three additional drives to a PowerMac G5 is the G5 Drive Bracket… The cost for the G5 Drive Bracket is $109 shipped.Best Wishes,

October 19, 2005 at 8:37 pmtrust me – buy the sonnet card, and an EXTERNAL box, like the Firmtek, and you will have a wonderful, inexpensive system. The Firmtek SATA enclosures work great.

October 20, 2005 at 5:42 amHi All,
Just to reinforce what Bob is saying, I have supplied customers with the Sonnet Tempo-X eSATA 8 PCI-X controller and the Fusion 400 4 drive enclosure (2 eclosures for 8 drives) and all are working great with HD.
One of my customers is Ten80 in Paris France, who I suppied with the Sonnet eSATA 8 and a DeckLink HD Pro, they sourced their own enclosure as this was before Sonnet had released the Fusion 400.
Read more about it here (in English)
https://www.ten80.fr/index.php?page=tech&article=french-applesI have just supplied a 4 drive system using the 500GB Hitachi 7K500 with a DeckLink HD Pro for light HD graphics work. It’s speed testing at 240 Megabytes per second read and 238 Megabytes per second write with RAID 10percent full, perfomance will drop off as the RAID fills. Available storage is 1.8TB formatted.
Even with 2 enclosures and 8 500GB drives these units are very quiet, no louder than a G5, A single 4 drive unit is much quieter than a G5.

I actually supplied Ten80 with the Sonnet Tempo 4+4 PCI-X card as this was before the eSATA 8 was released.
