Beta SP UVW1400a & Decklink Extreme
To all who have answered, thank you.
Unfortunately I still cannot control my Beta SP deck!!!
Using an RS-422(9pin) to RS-232(25 pin)
adapter connecting the Decklink to the Beta SP
I get an VTR-OK message on my FCP5 log/capture window.
That sounds promising, except I still can’t control the deck at all.
If I switch the deck from 9600 baud to 19200 the VTR-OK
changes to No comm.
I just replaced the Decklink Extreme Card for a new one.
So it’s not a hardware thing.
Please let me know if you have any more suggestions.

the only person in the world who will be able to give you accurate answers to your problem is Bruce at http://www.addenda.com. No NLE manufacturer supports the UVW1400a. Your only chance is to speak with Bruce.

Hi Michael,
DeckLink cards include RS-422 serial control but not the older RS-232 standard. The trick is not to us an RS-422 to RS-232 adapter but simply use an RS-232 adapter. The manual includes the following information in regards to RS-232 deck control.
Some low-cost decks, such as the Sony UVW1400a still use RS-232. Final Cut Pro can provide deck control via RS-232 with the addition of a Keyspan High Speed USB Serial Adapter. You will need to configure the RS-232 protocol by going to the Audio/Video Settings, in Final Cut Pro, and then click on Device Control Presets. Edit each preset for which you want to use RS-232. This solution works fine if you have to use RS-232.

I tried every configuration possible using the keyspan adapter.
The only thing left to do was send it back for a replacement.
I hope a new one will do the trick.The odd thig is that through the decklink RS422
there is some communication happening with the Beta SP.
I do get VTR ok in the log capture window of FCP5.Why can’t it control the deck though?
Personally, it was one of the main buying
points to getting the Decklink card!It’s a pity that no one at Balckmagic has solved this problem.

Sony has worked very hard to make sure that people who want full editing features cannot use their more inexpensive products. This is not the responsibily of AVID, Blackmagic, AJA, Aurora, or others to make a miracle happen, that Sony has worked very hard to insure that customers must purchase the more expensive VTR.The RS232 port on these VTR’s was designed for Audio/visual applications, like playback in conference and board rooms, or at convention centers, using controllers from companies like AMX and Crestron, that write specific software that uses a PC’s RS232 COMM port to talk to products like the UVW1400.
Sony wants you to buy the professional editing series, like the UVW1600 and 1800 for full editing capabilities. There are companies like Addenda and Keyspan that make generic RS232 to RS422 adaptors, but there is no guarantee that these will work with Sony VTR”s, as they are generic RS232 to RS422 adaptors – not Sony VTR miracle boxes.
You will soon see the same thing as you go towards “cheap” HD VTR’s. People can’t understand why the Panasonic AJ-HD1200A ($25,000) doesn’t have full editing capability as the more expensive AJ-HD1700. People can’t understand why the Sony HDV cameras and VTR’s don’t work like the expensive Sony HD Cam products. SONY DOES THIS ON PURPOSE. THEY WANT TO SELL THE MORE EXPENSIVE MACHINES. They have only ONE concern – to get your money.
This dates back to the days of 3/4″ VTR’s from Sony – where the BVU series of 3/4″ VTR’s had Time Code, and the VO series did not have Time Code (but cost about half of a BVU series). Everyone came out with these horrible adaptors to try to get the VO series (VO5850, etc.) to have Time Code. But they were all crap, and plenty of people complained – how come it don’t work ? BECAUSE SONY WANTED YOU TO BUY THE BUV800 at TWICE THE PRICE. It was that way 20 years ago, it’s that way today.
Cry to Sony, not the manufacturers of these editing products.

USA-19HS) did not work as customers have reported a 100% success rate using this adapter with the UVW-1400a deck. Hopefully you did just have a faulty adapter and a replacement should fix that.[michael engel] “Why can’t it control the deck though?

It seems like such a waste of cables”That’s easy to answer. The DeckLink card provides built-in support for the RS-422 serial protocol used by most professional decks. Some inexpensive decks, and some much older decks, only support the older RS-232 protocol and this makes it a bit tricky to control the deck. RS-422 is a more modern standard with greater abilities and that’s what our cards support.
