  • Proper codec/settings for 709 to 601 color space conversion?

Posted by B. Rordin on August 18, 2005 at 4:21 pm

I’m capturing HD material in FCP5 using Decklink HD with easy setup “Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 50 – 10bit”. Then I’m editing in HD and outputing from a “Blackmagic PAL – 10bit” sequence by droping the HD sequence into the PAL sequence. I wonder if the color space is converted properly from 709 to 601? May be I’m paranoid but it seems that the reds are a little bit hue shifted and look slightly purplelish on my SD monitor then the source on the HD monitor. I remeber that there was something funky with the color space conversions in FCP4.5 – I had to render my SD sequence using the “Always render in RGB” option for colors to be correct. So what’s the current situation with color space conversion between HD and SD in FCP5?

Great question and I look forward to hearing an informed answer, but given that 601 is a more constrained space than 709, wouldn’t it be normal to see a difference in some circumstances?

    Hi,

The easiest way to ensure that you have correct colorspace conversion is to use the downconversion feature of the DeckLink drivers. By enabling down conversion in the DeckLink PrefPane in the System Preferences, you can continue to work in the Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 50 – 10bit timeline. When you play back the HD video through the DeckLink card, it will output as standard definition PAL.

Thanks for the suggestion but in my case it doesn’t work. My output needs to be 4:3 cropped not leterboxed as the decklink downconvertor allows and on top of that decklink resize looks more blurry than the fcp5 resize set at best setting in the sequence properties. I’ve made direct compare between the two and for me it’s not acceptable.

It should have less color resolution but I think that it shouldn’t have any visible hue shifts amd gamma changes.

    Hi,

If you don’t want letterbox or anamorphic down conversion, then my suggestion would be to make sure you render your PAL sequence as I believe that way will ensure that the Apple codecs look after the color space conversion.
