  • Blackmagic 10 bit codec vs. “None” uncompressed codec question?

I’ve been working with a Blackmagic 10 bit FCP 5 timeline. I’ve color corrected the footage and it looks great. I happened to be messing with the timeline codec settings and I noticed that if I change the codec from Blackmagic 10 bit to “None” the image drastically brightens up.

What I’m wondering is why there is a shift in colors when switching between these codecs… Shouldn’t they be similar? I assume this is due to an RGB conversion? I’ve noticed that if i select FCP to render in RGB using the Blackmagic 10 bit codec i don’t see any change in brightness. So RGB on Blackmagic does’t seem to make a difference.

Ultimately my project is heading to DVD (DVD Studio Pro 4) and I’m wondering how the footage will look when it goes through the RGB conversion to MPEG. Will it look like the Blackmagic 10 bit codec or will it have the brightness of the “None” codec?

We’ve had the same trouble, wierd luma shifts with the apple uncompressed codec, we do DVD’s too and it’s a nightmare trying to get the static menus to match the animation.
I don’t know how Studio Pro handles it but the final MPEG2 should be YUV not RGB right?
