DV playback at last – again!
This is not a gripe or question, but a share thing, which may just help someone as stuck as I was.
Our edit sets started to have problems playing (PAL) DV footage, from FCP 4.5, via Decklink Pro, to the video monitor (one of Decklink’s more outrageously useful features). This started some months ago, and maybe I missed something significant, but it had almost always worked fine before.
The problem was that sometimes playing from the time-line was fine, but when mirrored on desktop it wasn’t. Running a clip in viewer would sometimes work then time-line wouldn’t, etc, etc – all sorts of silly, inconsistent problems. This was using DV-PAL or Photo-JPEG as video playback. Each gave me different, but just as horrible results. Photo-JPEG (our weapon of choice) as editing and playout format worked as flawlessly as ever of course, but some tedious people would insist on shooting DV.
After lots of kicking, shouting, and heavy duty praying, I tried using PAL 8 bit as output (just ‘cos giving up is hard to do) – and it WORKED! HA!!!
Making sure DV-PAL ‘Effect Handling’ was switched on made sure that the whole thing once more ran as sweetly as it ever did. Then making a new Easy Setup with DV for Capture and Sequence and Blackmagic PAL 8bit (720×576) as Video Playback made the whole thing bullet-proof.
Oh happy man that I am. Now all our little DV people can edit to their heart’s content and see it all in clorious RGB, or whatever.
