Im attempting to create an explosion in a home-like-movie clip (about 45 seconds-ish). This wouldent be a huge deal if I had not moved the camera around so much (but it looks really good and I want to try and work with it!!! :))So idealy I would like to be able to import an alpha-channel sequence and have it as one track with my video as another and then apply some sort of tracking to the effect, thus matching the camera and the fx. Any ideas? For those thinking about the offset feature in particle illusion, it is QUITE cumbersome and not all that acurate doing it that way. I have read about some camera tracking programs that might do the trick but I wanted to see what this forum had to say.

(Note — this isnt quite a big deal, but anyone that can tackle the motion-blur problem too would be AWESOME!)

So I’m assuming you are generating your explosion in PI. Then animate the explosion in PI and save it to a Quicktime (w/ alpha of course) that is higher res then your output resolution. So your layer will have room to be moved around and not see the edges of your effect.

Bring this effect and your vid clip into AE. Use the AE tracker to get tracking data on the clip. You may have to really work with it if there is a lot of motion blur. Once you get this data right, apply it to a null layer.

Then parent your explosion to the null layer so it moves in sync with the clip. Now just grab your explosion clip in the comp window and repo it till it’s in the right spot. Also resize it to what you need.

From this point on, it’s classic compositing: Color correcting it to match the scene, roto out objects that should be in front of it, etc…
