Anyone know how to split fields in AE? I’ve seen operations where the clip becomes twice as long, splitting fields into individual frames. It seems to be the best way to rotoscope or perform compositing operations without losing details.

Right now I’m working with NTSC DV footage, at 29.97fps.

Assuming your source footage is interlaced…
Set your field order in the interpret footage settings. I believe you should set it to lower first. Then Place your clip on a composition and slow the clip down to 200 percent and the fields will appear separated and you should have twice as many whole frames.

A quicker way is to set the comp frame rate (Composition Settings) to 59.94. This will show you every field in the comp window. If you have the timecode base set to frames your clip will appear to double in length in the timeline. If you have the timecode base set to SMPTE your clip will not appear to change but when you step through the clip frame by frame, the time indicator will only update every second step.
Once you’ve finished the rotoscope just render the comp out at 29.97fps with fields (you can set this in the Render Queue). There’s no need to change the comp back to 29.97.
