bouncing string
Posted by Malcolm Desoto on February 7, 2011 at 10:45 pmokay, couldn’t quite find this in the forum archives. I apologize if this has been worked out before.
I just want to create a string that a logo hangs on that will drop into frame. I’d like the rope/string to bend and recoil with the logo as it jerks to the end of it’s rope and then comes to a rest.
Does this make sense?

February 7, 2011 at 10:52 pmAs a side, it’d be neat if there were a way to make the string snap as well. So far, I can use the puppet tool to animate an image file of a string, but it would be preferable if it could be a little more automated.

February 7, 2011 at 11:21 pmYeah, I thought about that, but I have a number of logos I have to do this to and each needs to be a little different as far as how it moves in relation to the logo. I ended up using the puppet tool and it turned out to be fairly convincing with not a ton of manual keyframing.
Just one keyframe at the drop, another on the bounce up to ‘kink’ the rope, and then one final for the resting place.
I can now substitute in the other logos with fair ease.
Guess, I shoulda worked on this a bit more before posting :/

February 7, 2011 at 11:45 pmthat would be ideal, but I don’t have enough time to animate or film it this time around. Next time.

February 8, 2011 at 2:01 pmHi, if you don’t have time for a practical method you could probably do this with expressions.
There is a great script called Ease & Wizz over on aescripts.com that with a bit of work might get close to what you are looking for
https://aescripts.com/ease-and-wizz/
Or you can ask over on the expressions forum or look on Dan Ebberts website https://www.motionscript.com/
Hope this helps.

February 8, 2011 at 4:42 pmthis would be a pretty tough thing to pull off… i think you’re looking for a physics simulation with an ik rig.
you might take a look at this old tutorial for creating a swinging chain:
https://library.creativecow.net/articles/armstrong_trent/swinging_chain.php
it uses parenting and expressions to create a realistic looking swinging chain… you could add a logo layer to the end of it to create a swinging logo on a chain, but i don’t think it will do quite what you are looking for.
but what would be closer to i think what you need is dan’s ik redux:
https://www.motionscript.com/design-guide/ik.html
but your’s would be more elaborate, needing many small pieces to link together. but the idea would be you’d attach the lose end to the logo (the control point), then animate the logo bouncing around, and the string should follow its movements. you may also need a little physics expression to create a bit of a gravity effect, but i’d tackle the ik rig first.
dan may also be able to help you with some specifics for what you’re after if you post questions in the expressions forum.
