I have just noticed a very strange thing, it seems After effects 6.5 hogs up to 50% CPU utilization from when it is loaded, to when it is sitting idle, this is both after a fresh load with no project and with a project loaded

To test if this was accurate, I did a sample 3d render using 3ds max 6 – once with AE sitting idle in the background and again without AE running at all. Sure enough when AE was in the background, 3ds max took almost TWICE AS LONG to render than when AE was not running!!!

Is this normal??? And sure I can always can AE when using other apps (though its a pain) but now I

    Hi Pablo,

It seems this is the norm with 6.5 and personally I’ve yet to hear of a fix for it. Also when rendering AE will max out our processors at 100%, strangely though the machine will quite happily allow me to use a different app’ while thats going on, the performance of the other apps at the time is acceptable if not blinding.

Actually I found a solution posted here way back. Seems if you install the gridiron xfactor plugin, even if you dont use the software, but as long as you install it, the problem is solved. I tried it and sure as heck it works perfectly.

Now I can leave AE open and render away at 100% in another application. I did have major probs installing the latest version xfactor v 1.5.3 – my screen froze up on every step of the install and then crashed my computer right at the end. Dont know what was going on but even though it didnt install fully, the plugin is their and AE works as it should.

In retrospect Id hate to think of the time Ive wasted on renders within Max and other apps thinking that AE was sitting their doing nothing. Oh well…live and learn.
