AE CS5, footage/comps look oddly washed out
Posted by Dean Chapman on January 18, 2011 at 10:08 pmI have a little problem that keeps bugging me….can’t figure it out.
When using AE CS5, my comps/footage always looks lighter/washed out in the viewer.
When i compare it to the same project/footage in AE CS4, it looks much richer. Is there something i’m missing here?

January 19, 2011 at 12:13 amAre you using color management?
Does this only happen with QuickTime assets?

January 19, 2011 at 2:06 amYes, it seems to only happen with quicktime footage.
I tried rendering out a single jpeg layer comp in each version and they look identical.
I also compared particle effects between both and it looks identical….
I’m not using color management on either.

January 19, 2011 at 2:21 amIf you care about consistent color, use color management. That’s what it’s for.
QuickTime has been a moving target for a long time now. The QuickTime Player attempts to do some gamma adjustment and basic color management, and the QuickTime framework injects gamma tags and color profile tags into some formats but not others. We haven’t been able to consistently hit that moving target. We added the Match Legacy After Effects QuickTime Gamma Adjustments project setting to try to get better consistency in some cases, but even that is only useful for some formats and some versions of QuickTime. The short answer is to not use QuickTime if you care about consistent color.
