3D black out?
Posted by Malcolm Desoto on January 18, 2011 at 6:33 pmhave some 1080 .mov footage in a comp.
I import a .png file. As soon as I click the 3D switch it goes completely black. Not sure what the deal is. There are no lights in the comp.
seems like I’m overlooking something simple…
Any ideas?

January 18, 2011 at 6:59 pmAlso, there’s a particle system in another comp and if I turn on the 3D switch for the .png file in that comp, everything but the .png file and the particle system vanish. The particle system also shrinks down to a quarter of it’s size…

January 18, 2011 at 7:01 pmSolution for now: make every layer in the comp 3D. As long as the 3D switch is on, it shows up…

January 18, 2011 at 7:10 pmHmmm, I’ve heard of some codec issues with footage originating from DSLRs, but I re-encoded it using an animation codec…
That might be it though. I’m still working with CS4

January 18, 2011 at 7:35 pmDo not mix 2D with 3D layers- AE does not like that. So if you have a 2d layer in between 3d layers, that may cause the problem.

January 18, 2011 at 8:44 pmHmmm, unless i’m mistaken…you’re looking through front view…not active camera… as soon as you turn one into 3d. 2d layers wont appear.

January 18, 2011 at 9:24 pmCassius Marques, you’re probably right. I’m too deep into the project at this point to start over and check if that’s what it was, but I’ll check when I start another project.
Ted, I’m pretty positive that’s not true. I mix 2D and 3D layers all the time.

What he was referring to was this: 2D layers sandwiched in between sets of 3D layers breaks 3D interaction. See 3D layer interactions, render order, and collapsed transformations [link] for more details.
