  • Does File Vault full disk encryption slow down video editing performance?

I’m aware of recommendations to turn on File Vault full disk encryption on my MacBook Pro to protect against loss of personal data if the computer gets stolen.

Will this significantly reduce performance for things like video editing and colour grading?

Do you have your boot drive and 2ry and external drives encrypted?

What about the loss of important client footage, audio recordings etc?

    Thanks for any insights!

I have the boot drive on my 2015 MacBook Pro encrypted with File Vault and I see no degradation in video editing performance whatsoever. I do not encrypt my external drives. I see no need to.

Here is my Disk Speed Test results from my encrypted boot drive:

That is plenty of bandwidth for me.
