    Hi:

    I’m trying to connect my Macbook Pro (early 2014 running 10.10.1) to a Windows desktop PC running windows 8.1 (not pro). The goal is simply to have both the PC and Macbook Pro talk to each other back and forth. Wifi is just to slow as I’d be moving large files from one to the other.

    I’ve tried to connect via an Ethernet cable via my router and have had no success. I’ve tried connecting directly to the PC via Ethernet and no luck. Now to qualify something… I don’t know jack about advanced connecting as I’m trying to do. I’ve looked at tutorials but none have a solution for my setup. Any help would be much appreciated and please remember, I’m a complete novice when it comes to networking and am open to whatever it takes.

    Thanks;

    I would try the Migration Assistant that comes with every Mac. It’s for migrating your data and it will allow you to connect a Mac and a PC via an ethernet cable and transfer files. You will need to download the free PC version of Migration Assistant in order to do this. I don’t know of any way to just let your Mac drive show up on a PC or vice versa.

    Personally, I just use an external 1TB USB3 drive to do large file transfers between systems.
