cant see other macs on network – shared not appearing :(
Hi all,
I have 2 macs in my office – both connected to a wifi router – sharing is on in both and usually no problem copying files between the two…
however for the last couple of weeks they cant see each other – nothing appears in ‘shared’ on the left panel of a finder window and i cant connect directly using the ip anddres (afp://192. etc etc)
can anyone help? never happened before and all sharing settings are set to ‘on’

You should download the bonjour browser and run it. It will show what’s out there broadcasting that it can share. You should see all your macs. If they are not in the same broadcast domain, you won’t see them.

Thanks for the tip – from Bonjour Browser it seems that we arent on the same broadcast domain – tho’ im not exactly sure what means :s
I can see my own mac, network printers etc but not my other mac – same goes for other mac – sees everything but me 🙁
do u have any idea how i remedy this? In the past it all just seemed to happen automatically…

First thing would be to try and ping them. (Look at their ip addresses in the pref panel and open a terminal to type “ping “. If that doesn’t work, then bonjour clearly won’t. If it does work, then it may be that sharing is disabled or that the preferences on the finder has sharing off. to ping, you have to broadcast the arp request. So if you can ping, broadcast works.

Can you open Terminal and provide the output from “/sbin/ifconfig -a” from both machines. I’m guessing these machines have somehow ended up on different IP subnets. Are they both talking over Wiifi or is one wired and one wireless?

Nothing looked immediately amiss there. I was thinking that they may have IP addresses on different subnets or just have wrong netmasks.
So let’s try these steps:
– Reboot each machine (I hate this as it’s sort of a cop out solution since you don’t necessarily find the exact cause, but sometimes the quick fix. You may have already tried this)
– Reboot the router (which make/model is it anywa
– As suggested earlier, can each machine ping the other. You can do this from Terminal or from the Network Utility (In/Applications/Utilities).
– Have you verified that file sharing is indeed turned on/enabled on both machines?And, no, you haven’t breached your security by posting that. We just know that you’re using the 192.168.1.0/24 network — along with the vast majority of the world.

sincere thanks for your time and help – ive learnt something along the way…
but now I feel truly stoopid; My partner and i realised we hadnt restarted our router for at least a fortnight, so we tried that, and yes, now everything works perfectly ;s
