I’ve just spent an hour searching the COW and Adobe for an answer and I am now ready to forget designing and go and live on an island, using my computer as a crab trap.

The more I read about aspect ratios the more I am convinced the whole thing is an evil plot.

I am making a title sequence (no footage, just AI files) in PAL D1/DV WIDESCREEN 720X576, ie 16:9

To show the client progress I am using QT files on the web. A while back someone on the COW gave me a tip about producing half-size correctly-proportioned QTs (stretch to 512×288) which works great.

However… when I attempted to make a full-size QT, it is narrow. I’m assuming it’s something to do with AE’s pixel correction? How do I make a correct QT? Stretch? To What?

    Many thanks

    A

If you want to preview the files on a computer, you can stretch them out to 1024*576, You can do this either in the ouput-settings of your render, or as I most often do, you can stretch the 720 version to 1024 wide in the quicktime-player. That way there’s no need to render twice.

But to deliver the final version for an editing program or duplication to digiBeta etc., always render out the ‘narrow’ 720×576 version.
It will be the 16/9 Television-screen that does the stretching.

If that doesn’t work search the Island Cow archive for ‘crabtrap laptop’, I think there are some helpful hints 🙂
