I bought a firewire external hard drive and formatted it as:
    ‘Mac OS Extended (Journalled)’
I then installed MacDrive 7 onto a PC, and transferred avi files, captured via Adobe Premiere Pro, from that PC to my external drive. The transfer of data went smoothly.
But when I tried opening the avi files in FCP HD on my iMac G4 (860 GHz, 768MB RAM), I couldn’t. The files opened in Quicktime and in iMovie, but exporting from either of these programs into FCP takes far longer than I’m willing to wait.
I have previously tested out opening an avi video file in FCP HD, and it worked–it gave me a warning that the avi is not an optimized file format for use with FCP, but it worked smoothly nonetheless.

I’ll be testing out the files from the external on FCP 5.1 tomorrow, to see if the problem has to do with my old computer.
Is there any way I can make this work now?
