  BLACK screen /etc/master .passwd: no such file or directory

  hello i keep getting the above message at start up, what aappears to be a black screen like the dos prompt of an 8086 pc circa 1984 anyhow the other message it says is -sh-2.05b# i have no idea what or how to fix this i have never encountered this before. could someone give me very detailed instructions on how to fix this problem and if there is a website for this please put in body of email thanks.
