  AVI codec problem

  Hey all,

  I have a problem with some AVI files in After Effects CS5. I had exported them years before on my PC as uncompressed microsoft AVI (in VLC it says codec ’24 bits RGB (RV24)’. Now on my mac in After effects and quicktime player the clips are black but the audio is still there.

  I’ve tried downloading all the AVI codecs for quicktime but none seem to work. The strange thing is, a few months ago when I bought my macbook pro, I opened up the project in After Effects and they all worked fine, so since then I’ve installed something that’s made it not work.

  I can open the files in VLC player, but I can’t export file with a high enough quality from VLC or any other exporter program.

  So if anyone has any advise about what codec I should be getting that would be fantastic.

  i’d recomend downloading ffdshow and using its directshow interface to reset libracodec RV24. An installation of a new codec changed its fourcc open library path.

  Hi Chris,

  Thanks for the quick response. FFdshow doesn’t seem to be available for Mac, is there any other way to reset RV24 libavcodec as you suggested on Mac OSX?

  After trying google, some people tried Perian for other AVI codec problems, but alas I already have that installed with no success with my RV24 codec AVI files.

  I don’t futz around with mac’s registry like I do windows’ which saves the fourcc code and dll name in the drivers32 path. but what you can do is 1 of 3 things.

  1. download a mac program that can move fourcc and dll codes around
  2. change/view the fourcc code of your mov with
  https://august.altervista.org/programmi/AviFourCCChangerX.sitthen set it to a very common fourcc that works.

  3.the fun and dangerous way is to change your mac’s registry that points to..an example(irlb.dll=RV24)

  Have you tried installing Perian?

  It should allow you to view any AVI.

  Thanks for all the help and advise, I did have Perian installed to no avail, and also had no luck with changing FourCC of the files.

  So in the end I had get onto a PC, open files in Quicktime and export to uncompressed MOVs, which Quicktime on my mac can play.
