I am unsure about how the XF400 handles SS and gain in aperture priority. If I want to control aperture, how does the camcorder apportion exposure correction between SS and gain?

The problem is the camera doesn’t have auto-gain and does not show its auto SS or gain setting in aperture priority.

Do you think Canon would allow SS to be significantly out of ratio with framerate, just to keep the right exposure? Things would get too choppy or fluid.

I’m trying to keep the correct SS to framerate ratio while controlling DOF. I am often shooting in constantly changing light and so in manual I am constantly chasing the needle.

The same question applies to exposure-comp in aperture priority.
