C100 MII Understanding PF 29.97
I am trying to wrap my head around PF29.97. I totally understand the concept of 29.97 and 30P. I prefer shooting 30P and have for years, but that’s only available in the mp4 format with this camera and from my understanding AVCHD is the better quality choice. Am I essentially getting the same thing with PF29.97? It’s that “shoots 30P but records 59.94i” thing that throws me. Thanks!

I’d love to know to. I may have just recorded at PF29.97, thinking it was recording as 29.97P, since the client wanted 30P, and it was the only between 60p and 24p in AVCHD. But now I understand that that PF29.97 was recorded as 60i? So the footage is interlaced and not progressive? Any further information would be useful.
I guess I should have recorded as MP4, which would have given me a true 30P.

I spoke with Canon yesterday. PF29.97 is indeed 30P but it is put in a 59.94i wrapper because some NLEs work with that better. You are actually getting 30p. I asked about the mp4 version of 30p in the C100 and was told that is more compressed for smaller file size to go direct to web and that AVCHD is the higher quality choice. You could record at 60P which is sharper and higher bit rate. I however prefer 30P over 60P because I like that it feels a bit more filmic and 24p I’d only reserve for something dramatic, not corporate. 60P is just too crisp for me and I only use it for slomo.

Also it works with older gear that don’t support progressive stuff. That’s one of the reasons PsF is a thing. Check out that wikipedia article.

Thanks Tero. That is a good article. I’m going with PsF29.97 AVCHD for run-and-gun and will use ProRes for most of my stuff once the SSD drive comes in for the Ninja.
