We live and die by the Sennheiser MKH416. Stunningly good and highly directional mic… very warm and open sound. We use it for a boom mic, which is usually its primary use… but it’s so good that a lot of voiceover artists actually use it as a booth mic, too… it was the late great Don LaFontaine’s mic of choice. It’s “mid priced” as far as pro shotgun mics go, coming in at about a grand.

BUT… it’s a mono mic. However Sennheiser does make stereo mics, I’d look for one of theirs in about this grade.

I can’t speak from any firsthand experience, because I don’t use stereo shotguns… but the Sennheiser MKH418S is a stereo mic with very similar specs to the mono 416. You probably couldn’t go wrong with that one.

If you are looking for a stereo field mic that does what you describe in your original post <>i need one that will try to ignore the audio from behind the camera and take audio from its sides and front<> take a look at a Audio-Technica AT8022 Stereo, I use a older version AT-8022 both on cam and for stage pickup, around $325-350US street price
