  • Canon XL1 shut down while taping.

Posted by Bob Karsner on June 18, 2010 at 6:34 pm

I have an old XL1 that powered down while I was shooting. The tape is stuck in the carriage and I cannot get the camera to power up. Is there an issue of the “sleep mode” not disengaging to allow the camera to “power up”. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, is there a way to get the tape out without the camera powering up.

    Thanks
    Bob

I’m assuming the XL1 has this, but are you sure you didn’t accidentally hit the (stupidly placed) standby switch?

If it won’t power up at all you may have:
    1. A bad power supply (I had to replace one)
    2. Bad/dirty/loose battery contacts
    3. A bad main circuit board from either age, condensation or both. I had to have one replaced.

The problem here is that Canon no longer supports the original XL-1. Some independent shops may be able to fix it, or at least recover your tape. Good luck.

I’ve used the XL1 before and had the same problem.
Solution: There should be an option in the menue that you can set so it doesn’t turn itself off. I believe it is call “power saving” or something related. Just turn that off, and good luck.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I was hoping for a miracle. The camera shut down
during a shoot and has never powered back up. I’ve done most of what you suggested.
I am leaning toward the bad circuitry. I agree the “stand by” button is a pain on it’s placement.

I’ve had this camera since 2000 and it has served me well. I was really just wanting to get it
running so I can use is for personal stuff… got 4 kids doing “you name it”.

    Thanks
