  canon xl1 external mic will not work

  I am trying to use an external mic in my xl1. I know the mic works, I unpluged the the shotgun mic and set the control to mic. Any ideas? Thanks

  shoot me if im wrong…but… your mic may need phantom power, and i dont think xl1 provides it.
  does the mic your using have a battery?
  have you checked your cable?
