  • Playing dv tapes recorded on canon camcorder on other makes

Posted by Peter Corcoran on September 15, 2008 at 10:01 am

My old trusty canon md400 packed up last month. i bought a new sony model but the old tapes that i had not had a chance to transfer to dvd play faster and there is limited sound.

Do i have to purchase another canon machine to playback old dv tapes? or will this be wasted money?

are there any other ways i can playback and edit old dv tapes recorded on another machine?

    please help!

If your tapes were recorded on cameras that have properly adjusted tape transports and the tape deck is also properly adjusted you should be able to play any DV tape on any kind of DV deck. I have both Canon and Sony MiniDV cameras and I use a cheap Sony palmcorder to transfer tapes to computer without issue.

Problems arise when you don’t get your acquisition cameras checked out every so often and they fall out of adjustment. Playing back those tapes with something else that is adjusted properly is when you start having trouble.
