Canon XL2 – XH A1 – or Sony FX1
I own a performance auto parts website and we are going to start doing some video installs/video podcasts, most of our videos will be shot indoors and we will need to zoom in fairly close on products. We have a macbookpro with intel core duo processor and a gig of ram with imovie hd to do the editing on. We have allotted roughly 3k in our budget for a new camera and have narrowed it down to the Canon XL2, XH A1 or the Sony FX1. We are wondering with our needs and the editing setup we have if it would be recommended to go HD or just stick with the XL2 or if there are other cameras that would be recommended. Any input would be appreciated.

You can shoot HDV and down-convert to SD for editing with the XH A1… you realize a lot of resolution and high degree of detail from this camera. Personally, I think it’s much more camera for the money than the older FX1…

I am having this same issue. Sony is clearly the low light king, the battery king and the reliability king. Panasonic is the color subtlety king in my opinion but they left me behind when they left tape behind. It just doesn’t make good business sense for even videographers to use anything but HDV.
My only worries about the Canons are the long history of mechanical failures and the tiny LCD. I hear it’s pretty high res but I swore I would never go back to anything smaller than a 3.5 after the DVX100. A 2.8 in wide screen is really more like a 2.2 when you consider aspect ratio.
Regardless, I am afraid that right now Canon may be by far the best bang for the buck….and hey….I may just fall in love with them. (need 2)
