  Black lines at top of XL2 footage – RP 188 code

  I have upconverted miniDV 24p (simple pulldown) clips to conform to my online edit sequence at 1080 23.98 psf HD.

  However, all of my footage shot on the XL2 has approx 3-4 black lines at the top. This is bad because it is intercut with several other SD and HD formats and the top edge of my frame is not consistent.

  I was told this might be the RP188 code written on the tape as only 1 line of blanking code…during the upconversion, this one line was then multiplied 3-4 times to HD.

  Is this the reason? Does anyone have any advice on how to avoid it next time? Or on how to scale these shots without introducing noise or distortion?
