I have footage of a band playing. I want an illustration i have made to interact with the band members. I have rotoscoped the band members out of the background inserted my illustration (an animated collection of geometric shapes that form a sphere like a kaleidoscope) in between the band members and the background. I want to be able to have some of the lines of the geometric shapes “wrap” around the band members, making it seem like the shape is 3d in a way. How can achieve this in AE?

THANKs in advance, any help or advice would be much appreciated!

One thing you need is to have the animation of the objects forming a sphere on layers- one for the part that is behind and one for the front. Also, if you want the objects to be in between the band members, have them on separate layers as well.
Here’s a tutorial that may give you some ideas:

Whoa, that was fast and REALLY helpful, thanks so much. I was also thinking about it and what if i had the background and the people separated in layers and applied the ball action effect to the background, would I be able to have the balls (or particles) wrap around the people using the same method?

You will need to be a bit more specific about that- what plugin/particles are you trying to use? How do you plan to use it?

Well, if i have the band members masked out I can make the background a seperate layer. I would apply the CC ball action effect and this will transform the background layer into balls which i can then animate (rotate on an axis, scatter, etc.) Is there a way i can make this layer in which i have applied this effect wrap around the layer with just the people i have rotoscoped out thats in front of it. Basically, is there a way to make a layer that is behind another one wrap around the layer that is in front? Does that give more clarification?

If you have a plugin that allows distortion in 3d space- like Freeform- then yes, you should be able to do it.
