  • What’s Up with Layer Styles?

Posted by Chris Tarroza on September 8, 2010 at 10:58 pm

I’ve been dealing with this problem since I started using layer styles. If I apply a stroke, or drop shadow, or outer glow, any of the layer styles, I run into problems when using motion blur or making them 3D with DOP.

For example, the stroke won’t have motion blur, but whatever is within the stroke does have motion blur. Turning on DOP with a stroked layer will cause these dots to appear around the stroke.

Any ways around this within AE? I figured I can bring it all into PS, apply all my layer styles there and merge it all, but that seems pretty inefficient.

    Any help would be great!

    Thanks,
    Chris

Try pre-composing the layer before applying motion blur/DOF

It’s only work if you’d rather be doing something else…

Layer styles come last in the render order, along with blending modes. Knowing the order of operations can help. See this page.
