‘double anamorphic’ issue creating sd dvds
here’s what i’m doing:
footage shot and captured as anamorphic dv pal into fcp 5.1.4
edited, then exported using compressor at 16:9
imported into dvd studio project with settings at 16:9 letterboxwhat happens:
plays as i want it to on a 4:3 tv, that is correctly proportioned and letterboxed…
on a 16:9 tv however, black bars top and bottom persist and image is stretched east/west. things are shorter and fatter.it is not the tv or dvd player settings: a different 16:9 dvd plays fine
these two people had the exact same problem, but whether they ever found a solution is unclear.

If the source footage was anamorphic 16:9- i.e. not letterboxed, and you set 16:9 anamorphic in compressor and set 16:9 letterbox on your track in DVDSP that should not be happening. Unless the DVD player is set to force 4:3… Check reference here:

yeah, i agree, it should not be happening. but it is and its frustrating.Unless the DVD player is set to force 4:3…
i don’t think it can be the playback setup i’m working with- as i say, it plays another 16:9 dvd fine…my stack of blank discs for testing is dwindling- any other ideas?

hi noah, an update:
my work around is to specify 16:9 pan-scan in dvd studio pro. this means that it plays as it should on a 16:9 tv, but with the two sides cropped off when viewed on a 4:3 tv. while i would prefer it to be letterboxed on a 4:3 tv, my priority is for 16:9 tvs. anyway, thanks for your help.

Also not correct. It should play full screen in 16:9 and letterboxed not pillarboxed on a DVD player. I’d suggest trying it on some different players. I’m betting big that it’s the DVD player’s aspect ratio settings, not your disc that are causing the disc to not display correctly.
