Have a stack of Hi8 tapes I need to digitize and get to DVD.

What would be the best quality option for getting onto computer?

    1) Consumer grade capture card or box

    2) Buy a used digital8 camcorder and output via Firewire?

    The second option seems simplier.

    Thanks

What’s your budget? To get the best quality, I’d capture to an uncompressed format then use a good encoder. Remember though, your encode will only be as good as your source – which isn’t great! 🙂

To make things easy just buy a set top recorder and go firewire into that.

I have a Sony DCR-TRV350 Digital 8 camera that I use for digitizing 8mm/Hi8/D8 tapes. I go straight out with firewire into FCP. This model will play back all three formats, but be careful, not all Digital 8 models will play nicely with 8mm/Hi8. Do a search and you can find a list of the models that work with all 3 formats.
