  Can I compress and encode at the same time?

  Hi Everyone,

  I’m not a huge techno-head, so sorry if this is a silly question.

  I have eleven one hour mini DV tapes to encode to DVD (one DVD will be one hour, so there’ll be 11 in total at the end). Rather than import the footage, compress it down and then burn it, is it possible for me to save time and import the footage from my camera into some burning software while compressing it at the same time?

  I thought I could do it in Toast, but it will only import 20 mins as I guess it needs to be compressed to fit the whole hour onto a DVD.

  I use a Mac.

  There is of course DVD-Recorders. You can google Hardware m2v encoders. Most are pretty expensive.

  You will either need:
  1) A DVD Recording Unit that will capture through firewire straight to dvd

  2) A Hardware capture device for your computer that allows you to capture straight to m2v. On the PC, the old Matrox RTX100 use to offer this, but their newer RTX2 does not.
