PLEASE- Need help with editing a DVD
New here, and hope I’m posting this in the correct forum.
I’ve seen lots of info about ripping DVDs, but little on re-assembling them. (At least nothing that was clear-cut enough to dispel all worries that I’d get it right).
I have a DVD for which I no longer have all the “pieces”, e.g. menus, buttons, etc., so I can’t rebuild the entire thing. I do have the raw footage, and 2 copies of the final burned production.
I’ve been asked to edit a small change in the DVD. (Someone’s name is spelled wrong in the opening credits. Now, 2 yrs later, I find out about it).
I only need to replace 1 text panel that displays for about 5 secs, with no motion, nothing special, other than a fade from/to black, so the total length/play time of footage will not change. After making the correction, I need to burn & print multiple copies.I’m hoping I’ll be able to use the existing menu/sub-menus/buttons.
My problem: I’ve never ripped a DVD, and have no idea how to re-assemble one.
AFAIK, there are no copyright/licensing issues, as this was a private birthday party for a consumer-level customer.
Here’s what I’ve done so far:
-I got mpegStreamclip AND the $ 20 Apple/QT mpeg reader.
-Using Streamclip, I converted the VIDEO_TS.VOB to ‘new.avi’(Did I lose some quality by doing that)?
-Imported ‘new.avi’ to PPro/CS2, edited in the change, and filed it as “corrected.avi”.
I’m not sure how to proceed.
From reading various posts, I’m under the impression I can “glue” the pieces back together without having to re-author the entire DVD, but I’m not sure how.
When I open VTS_01_0.VOB in Streamclip, I can see the various menu items/panels.
I’d like to rebuild the entire DVD using all the “old parts” except that I want to replace the “bad” footage with the corrected footage.
How do I proceed to re-assemble this?
I figure my next steps might be:
– to open Encore DVD 2.0
– import as “Assets” a) my corrected .avi, and b) all other files from the DVD, (except the “bad” one VIDEO_TS.VOB)
– have Encore DVD “Build” my DVD as if it were using all .avisAm I correct about that? It seems too “simple”? (So simple that I’m suspicious that I’ve overlooked something necessary but not obvious to me).
Do I first have to convert all untouched VOBs to mpegs?Do I need other software or a different approach? Maybe to preserve quality and/or the menu structure? (Someone suggested Womble would have prevented loss of quality, but I have no idea how much loss of quality I’ll suffer).
I’m also uncertain what to do with, or how to use, all the other files/folders that reside on the DVD:

FWIW, I’ve had no audio problems after converting VIDEO_TS.VOB to an .avi file. (StreamClip seems to have handled that just fine).
I’m afraid of ruining, or having to re-create the menu structure.
How do I reassemble this DVD to include the correction?
(Apologies for the length; hoping all the details might help).
All help greatly appreciated.Running Adobe Production Studio Premium/CS2 on double dual-core AMD 275 processors, 1.5 TB RAID, under XP.
Thanks.
