PAL to Blu-ray 24p (ntsc 23,98)
For a few projects I had to convert my project to NTSC. Using this forums and an excellent tutorial found in this link I managed to smoothly convert a Pal 25fps project to NTSC 29,97fps.
But now I have a new assignment and the film in question needs to be published to Blu-ray disc. After reading many mixed reviews and experiences on these forums I decided to make the jump nonetheless using an LG external blu-ray burner and Adobe Encore. The projection requires a 1920×1080 24p blu-ray.
These are my own experiences so far:
I used compressor to do an advanced format conversion. Converting the 25fps source to 23,976 (23,98). The result is a nice looking quicktime file that fits the audio track but unfortunately drops frames to fit the new timeframe. It keeps stuttering and this looks extremely bad, even on a 32″ tv. I can only guess at the headaches this’ll give in a theater projection.
the Big Question:
What is the best way to convert a Pal source to 23,98fps?

If your Pal movie was shot on film or another progressive format, it’s easy. Just slow down 23.976 and change the audio as well.
(If it was film, it probably was transferred speeded up, so with increased pitch. When you change speed, also let the pitch go down. Better quality, faster render, restore the original.)For the video you can use AE (set source and output to progressive), or perhaps Cinematools.
For audio you can choose from a wide variety of programs. Pick one you like…
If it was shot interlaced, you can also slow it down, but i have no idea what that is going to look like if pulldown is added…

The film was shot digital at 25P. So that means I’ll have to slow down and pitch up the audio. That should be doable in Soundtrack Pro. I’ll use cinematools to reconfirm the framerate.

I’m not sure if you have to pitch shift the audio.
Dunno about BluRay, but if you put a 24 movie on a SD PAL DVD, the player will speed it up to 25. (not sure if anyone ever did this, but it should be possible according to Cinemacraft…)So if you intend to publish in Pal country, and indeed the player speeds up, you end up with a too high pitch.
For NTSC, if pulldown is added there is no speed change so you’ll be good there.
I would recommend a bit reading on the subject, as well as test, test, test. (Do put some start/end beeps in sound and image to check the audio duration change)
