I have a long vob file on my hard disk and need to put an excerpt onto dvd at maximum quality. Basically I’m using (MAC) mpeg streamclip to get to mpeg4 or .mov and then to toast. Quality of the new file is much lower in every variation I’ve tried (uncompressed, etc.). Going through FCP is worse. Would appreciate suggestions.

You should be able to set your in and out points of that VOB file them demux to MPEG2 – no loss of quality.
