archival DVD brand?
Posted by Bob Cole on February 26, 2006 at 1:54 am“A friend told me” that the only archival DVD brand with a long guarantee is from a company called MAM-A.
Anybody know about this?

February 26, 2006 at 4:36 amNever heard of them. Any good quality media is great for archiving. I use TDK – never had a problem

February 26, 2006 at 5:31 pm100 years from now, when you put that DVD in your DVD drive you will most likely find that neither you nor your DVD are in great condition.

February 26, 2006 at 7:29 pmThats true 🙂 ..but if I wanted to archive my video for long periods of time your best bet would be to use tape.

February 26, 2006 at 7:40 pmWell, most tape has been proven to have a shelf life of only ten years before the glue that bonds the oxide starts to deteriorate. Disc based media is supposed to last much longer, but no one really knows.

February 27, 2006 at 1:22 amfollow-up: I did a little more research, mainly on sites devoted to digital photography, and found some substantiation for the archival claims of MAM-A. It’s all about the gold.
And anyway, we could re-archive all our “keepers” every XX years, on the best media of the time. Deciding what’s a “keeper?” That’s tougher!

February 27, 2006 at 10:41 pmMAM-A is very reputable brand. They have a production plant in Colorado. I have used their CDs and DVDs in the past. Excellent quality.
