I made a 3d model in an open source program known as blender and had the background be zero black and then rendered the image as a .png file. Now when I import it into adobe after effects the image shows the model but it also shows the black background. So my question is how can I go about making any .png image actually come out transparent without using any chroma keys?

Right click the file in the project panel and check the “Interpret Footage” window to make sure the alpha is interpreted correctly.

Wow this is a bit embarrassing. It turns out the problem was in blender. I fixed it now and I’m really sorry for wasting your time.
