We have a studio shot tomorrow where the client wants to do some live hands-on work with an ipad app on-camera, plus they want Iso shots of just the iPad. Luddite that I am, I have never played with one of these yet, luckily, I’m just a grip tomorrow, it’s not my assignment, but I’d like to know about options to take a “video-out” from the pad, into, say, a scan converter’s VGA-input, which we have… or an SDI cable.
Is this easy to do or not? My guy is planning to shoot the screen practically but I’d like to offer him a back-up plan.

It’s OK Mark, I’ve only touched an iPad once.

Googling shows a few resources https://bit.ly/1czrXW4, and you have to know which generation of iPad as well. Here’s one at Best Buy https://bit.ly/19A9YKT that gives component out.

For the video out, there is a 30 pin/Lightning to HDMI adapter. A while ago, just for fun, I plugged it into the DVI input of my Panasonic AW HS 50 switcher to see if the signal would work. It did. I imagine an AJA HA-5 would receive the iPads HDMI signal as well, giving you hdsdi out from the iPad.

Unfortunately not all Apps will output a video signal, so being able to use the iPads output is dependent on what app the client is running.
