We have a Sony PMW-200 and would like to shoot a skiing slalom competition for a friend. Up until now, most of our work has been done in a studio and we have little experience in shooting outside nor a sporting event! We will be using a tripod with fluid head.

    – Should we be using HD422 or is HD420 adequate?
    – What about 50i or 25P?
    – Any other tips on how best to setup the camera would be cool.

    Many thanks, Oliver

4:2:0 should be adequate. If you’re shooting skiing then you don’t get any more exposure latitude from 4:2:2 and color contrast should be pretty strong against snow.

I would shoot 50i. 50i and 60i is common for sports broadcast because you get greater temporal fidelity (more slices per time than progressive footage).

In terms of shooting outdoors in the snow, make sure you have ND filters and polarizers. Shooting outdoors in the cold, be prepared to have extra batteries. As temperature falls, the internal resistance of a batter rises, so it’ll die more quickly.

Watch out for condensation, ease the transition from indoors/outdoors and from closed case to open case to let the camera acclimate.
